Orthodontic treatment is about a change for the better no matter what your age. Straight teeth can give you the perfect smile, which leads to confidence and good self-esteem. The overall health of your teeth and gums can also be improved.
When you have a bad bite (malocclusion) your teeth may be crowded or spaced or may not fit together correctly. Crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. In time the crowding may lead to tooth decay, gum disease and even tooth loss. Bad bites can lead to uneven wear of tooth surfaces, difficulty chewing, TMD (pain in the jaw joint) and damage to the supporting bone and gum tissue.
Braces can be placed at any age though the condition of your gums, teeth and supporting bone are the most important factor in determining if you are a good candidate for braces.
Teeth move throughout life and especially the lower front teeth move noticeably in the persons thirties so braces may be needed again at this time.
These days’ braces are far more esthetic than they ever were. Dr Claudia has tested many types of clear braces and has chosen the ones that she feels are the most esthetic.
Clear aligners may be used in certain individuals who only need minor tooth movement.
Lingual Braces can also be used in certain cases where just the lower front teeth are crowded and a short period of treatment is only needed.
Sometimes braces will be needed to move the teeth in various directions to allow the general dentist to do implants, or better, more esthetic restorations. If you are planning to have veneers placed and have some crowding in the lower teeth then your dentist will send you to have the lower teeth aligned first. This will allow the veneers to function better.
Achieving healthy beautiful smiles is a team effort that involves the general dentist, orthodontist and possibly other dental specialists. A multidisciplinary approach is often needed when a lot of restorations are indicated. The team will come up with a plan that will then be carried out.
Regular visits to the general dentist will be necessary at least every six months throughout treatment to ensure the teeth are kept clean and decay has not formed.
Whatever age you have braces with Dr. Claudia you know you will not need braces again because if you wear your retainers as instructed you will have a beautiful smile forever!
