Congratulations! Now that your braces are off, we hope you are enjoying your new smile.
The “retention phase” is an extremely important phase of orthodontic treatment. This involves wearing retainers and/or the placement of fixed retainers which are attached to the teeth.
Retention Visit Protocol:
For 6 months after the braces are removed the clear retainers must be worn all the time except while eating. After 6 months of full time wear the retainers can be worn at night time only. One year after the braces are removed the retainers can be worn as little as 2 nights per week. Retainers must be worn forever at least one night per week.
Dr. Claudia usually places fixed/bonded retainers on the front six teeth in both jaws.
Fixed retainers must be checked regularly for breakage. If broken you need to wear the clear retainer until the repair can be carried out.You must floss under the fixed retainer at least twice per week as plaque can get trapped easily which can cause decay and calculus build up. The videos above show how easy it is to floss your fixed retainers.
Clear retainers are the most esthetic type of retiener. They are molded plastic made on the day you get your braces off. They are usually given in addition to your fixed retainers.
Clear retainers must not be bleached or left in mouthwash as it will cause damage. To clean retainers use toothpaste and toothbrush and gently brush. DO NOT PLACE IN HOT WATER.Hawley Retainers:
Hawley retainers are made from acrylic and are generally not Dr. Claudia’s retainer of choice. As they are less esthetic they are generally not worn according to instructions.
If you Lose or break your retainers they will need to be replaced
